Description

Despatches from Eyre Hutson, governor of British Honduras (November to December 1920) together with correspondence from Government departments on matters relating to British Honduras sent during the year. Despatches are described at item level; other correspondence is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • Admiralty (wireless communication between British Honduras and Jamaica, situation at Belize and visit of HMS Cambrian, Belize wireless station and erection of a suitable arc-set, addressing of telegrams to and from British Honduras, improvement of wireless station at Belize);
  • Crown Agents (salary of the Acting Director of Public Works Mr M Murphy, local loan, Mr Walter's salary as Colonial Secretary, passages for Sir Robert and Lady Roden to British Honduras, stands of arms supplied to the colonial Government, Scottish-American Oil and Transport Company, application of D Elliott Alves for oil concession, Belize loan, appointments of Assistant Director of Public Works and District Engineer of Public Works Department of British Honduras, application of the Scottish-American Oil and Transport Company for an oil prospecting licence, new stamp issue, increase of pensions, new public buildings and draft agreement with Jefferson Construction Company, peace commemoration stamps, public works, proposed construction of a sea wall at Fort George in Belize, raising of a loan for colonial Government in Canada);
  • Foreign Office (visit of Prince William of Sweden, claims against the Government of Honduras, complaints of British subjects against Honduras officials and case of H G Lane, passports for Mexico, claim of J F Sheran against the Honduras Government, political situation in Guatemala, situation in Mexico and arrival of Mexican refugees in British Honduras, strike at Puerto Barrios, Guatemala boundary);
  • Home Office (establishment of an industrial school in British Honduras);
  • India Office (application of Captain Hearne for appointment in the Indian medical service);
  • Medical Advisers (medical report of H Baker);
  • Board of Trade (rate of exchange of the import duty);
  • War Office (incidence of cost of the Royal Sussex Regiment detachment at Belize, conversion into local currency of Imperial Treasury notes, withdrawal of British troops from Belize, pay of Colour Sergeant P E Matthews, transfer of men from the Royal Sussex Regiment for service under the Colonial Government, discharge of Colour Sergeant P E Matthews, troops for Belize and Bermuda, West Indies Regiment detachment for Belize, case of Corporal I A Sabido of British West Indies Regiment, cashing of Imperial Treasury notes in the Colony and rate of exchange, war gratuity to Colour Sergeant P E Matthews)
