Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Correspondence from Miscellaneous Offices and Individuals on matters relating to British Honduras. Correspondents and subjects are as follows: Offices:

  • Admiralty (present state of affairs in Honduras);
  • Crown Agents (Mr Sheldon's offer to redeem certain emigration bonds, provision of a steam launch for service of the colony, Mr White's estimate for a steam launch, authority to pay half-salary to Reverend A Field);
  • Board of Trade (claim on account of the wrecked crew of the James Welsh, costs incurred on account of the distressed seamen of the French ship Enfants Nantais);
  • Foreign Office (raids which have taken place from Mexico into Texas, the Foreign Entitlement Act 1870, recent disturbances in Ruatan, state of affairs in Ruatan, Messrs Dourner Murald and Gegg's memorials for compensation for the losses caused to them by the 'Indian' raid, reply of the Honduras Minister for Foreign Affairs to representations on behalf of the inhabitants of Ruatan, omission in the new Constitution of Guatemala of all mention of boundaries of British Honduras, alleged detention of British subjects in Costa Rica, detention of arms seized by order of the Lieutenant Governor of British Honduras no longer required, appointment of a British Consul at Ruatan, appointment of Mr C H Brinton as United States Vice-Commercial Agent in Belize, protest of the Mexican Government against the demand for compensation for the raids of the Mexican Indians, complaint of Messrs Young Harrison and Bevan in respect of compensation through the Indian raids, proposed shipment of arms on board the General Sherman for the suspected use against one of the Central American republics, appointment of Don Manuel Lemos as the Guatemalan Consul, late filibustering expedition against Guatemala and Honduras, Governor's proceedings with reference to the revolutionary movement in Spanish Honduras, revocation of Don Manuel Lemos's appointment as Guatemalan Consul and appointment of Don D Sanchez in lieu, alleged violation of British territory by the 'de facto' Government of Spanish Honduras, internal dissensions in the Republic of Honduras, appointment of Don Delfino Sanchez to act as Consul at Belize for the Republic of Guatemala, violation of British territory by the Honduras Republican forces, complaint of the Guatemalan Government of the proceedings of certain Jesuits in British Honduras, proclamation of the Lieutenant Governor forbidding the export of arms);
  • War Office (charges for military staff and departments not to be made by the Imperial Government, proposed fortified barracks at Carosal and Orange Walk, services of Lieutenant Bale in connection with works of defence, mode of obtaining supplies for troops stationed in the colony, appointment of Mr Von Ochlafen to undertake the direction of the frontier defence works, regulations for naval and military settlers, objection to the reduction of troops serving in British Honduras, proposed changes of military head quarters, military department of the colony, combination of the duties of Administrator with those of Chief Military Officer in Command of the Troops, Lieutenant Governor's suggestions for provisioning the troops);
  • British Honduras Company Limited (frequency of 'Indian' raids and devastation caused thereby, Mexican aggressions, continued uncertain state of affairs and probability of another 'Indian' raid, compensation for losses by 'Indian' raids and settlement of the boundaries question, difficulty experienced for the want of coin);
  • General Post Office (continued arrival at St Thomas of unpaid letters for British Honduras).
