Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Letters from various government offices (departments), other organisations and individuals most of which relate to the despatches sent from the governor in CO 123/136, CO 123/137, CO 123/138, CO 123/139, CO 123/140 and CO 123/141. Correspondents and subjects covered are as follows: Offices:

  • House of Commons (question relating to Mayans ['Indians'] of Yucatan 'irrupting' into colony of British Honduras, under command of Mexican army; compensation for losses over 'irruption');
  • Admiralty (relating to 'irruption' of 'Mexican Indians');
  • Agent (disposal of surplus Crown revenue);
  • Law Officers (constitutional question);
  • Treasury (proposed mail service between Belize and Jamaica);
  • Foreign Office (note from Swedish minister regarding Swedish and Norwegian consul; complaints made by Mr Bowen of ill-treatment received from Yucatan authorities; Mayan 'uprising'; introduction of labourers into British Honduras from New Orleans);
  • War Office (transfer of part of St George's Cay to the War Department; gun stores and ammunition purchased; rifle exchange; military affairs; temporary barracks; transfer of English Cay and parts of St George's Cay; allowance for ministering troops; islet known as the fort - question of transfer to civil authority);
  • Land Board (petition from planters for introduction of labourers from New Orleans);
  • General Post Office (transaction of money order business; payment of mail service; treatment of correspondence between British Honduras and Spanish Honduras and Guatemala);
  • British Honduras Company Limited (safety of the colony; Mayan uprising);

  • Reverend Richard Dowsen (leave of absence);
  • Sir Grant (proposed monthly steam service between Belize, Jamaica and New York);
  • Major Johnston (asks to be recommended for office, which can be combined with military duties; sends various letters and testimonials);
