Description

Despatches from Edward John Eyre, most of them covering correspondence from the lieutenant governor of British Honduras, (October-December 1863) together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and individuals sent during the year. Despatches are described at item level; letters from offices and individuals are not and correspondents and subjects covered are as follows: Offices:

  • Admiralty (entertainment of Bishop of Kingston; contract passage for Mr Berkeley; entertainment of Lieutenant Governor Price; mail between Honduras and Jamaica);
  • Agent (mail communication with Jamaica);
  • Council Office (John Hodge versus Attorney General);
  • Foreign Office (Mr Leas, consular agent for United States; purchase of Bay Islands; Guatemalan government and 'Indian' relations; appointment of Swedish consul; gold medal to Messrs Price and Salmon; state of Central America; treaty with Republic of Salvador; Austrian consul; export of arms to confederate states; seizure of federal ship Clyde; address to Lieutenant Governor Seymour; withdraw of Mr Kirkpatrick's exequatur);
  • Land Board (inducements to settlers; application for land from Felix Robinson, a resident in Ruatan);
  • Law Officers (Act No 8 relating to unsworn testimony);
  • Police (fires in Belize);
  • Post Office (postal communication via New York);
  • Board of Trade (Act No 4 relating to import duties and taxes; Act No 11 relating to rendering assistance to stranded boats and saying persons and goods);
  • Treasury (Crown Fund accounts; ship of war; Bishop of Kingston's entertainment; contribution from Imperial funds for steamer; Act relating to import duties; mail communication with Jamaica; payment for ship entertainment; house for temporary school purposes);
  • War Office (recent 'disturbances' between military and people of Belize; conduct of Captain Fanning).
