Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Offices and Individuals. Letters from various government offices (departments), other organisations and individuals most of which relate to the despatches sent from the governor in CO 123/59 and CO 123/60. Correspondents and subjects covered are as follows: Offices:

  • Admiralty (question about P Walker's expenses to Yucatan; question about Colonel McDonald's expenses on visit to the Mosquito King);
  • Commander in Chief (reference to necessity of obtaining the signature of the Superintendent to arrest warrants against any of the military in the garrison of the settlement);
  • Foreign Office (transmission of a bag of despatches to Lord Russell from Honduras; approves Colonel Macdonald's conduct relative to proceedings for obtaining redress for injuries done to British subjects at Guatemala; reference to plans of a certain party in New Granada to place the republic under protection of Great Britain; intention of Costa Rica to 'encroach' on Mosquito territory; purchase of certain lands in Yucatan; proposal of King of Mosquito Shore's agent to cede harbour of Boca del Toro to Britain; treaty with Guatemala; Ruatan island; boundary between Costa Rica and the Mosquito nation; political relations with Mosquito nation; sovereignty over Honduras; French government at Campeche; plan of a Belgian company to colonisation in Guatemala; cession of Honduras by Spain; enforcement of British claims in central America);
  • Treasury (approves expenditure for presents to Mosquito nation; duty on mahogany; expedition to ruins of Palenki; appointment of collector of customs at Belize; payment of passage of superintendent from Belize to Mosquito shore);
  • Royal Geographical Society (acknowledges receipt of drawing of ruins of Palengue; asks if any maps accompanied drawings; expresses thanks for perusal of Mr Walker's report);
  • Post Office (appointment of person in Honduras for mail service).

  • G Angas (leave of absence application for W Walsh);
  • G Banks (memorial relating to time for grand jury to excercise functions);
  • Captain Caddy (requests that his drawings of Palengue may be returned to be finished and published);

  • J Prowett (reference to the Mosquito Shore; import duties for the Mosquito Shore; requests compensation with reference to lands on the Mosquito Shore; relates to manumission of certain enslaved persons on his estate on the Mosquito Shore; his grant of land in the Mosquito territory);
  • R Rudolph (has just returned from the Mosquito Shore and is happy to supply any information);
  • Mrs Symons (requests assistance towards recovery of a sum of money lent by her to her son, the Secretary of Honduras);
  • George Upton (requests interview as Agent to the Mosquito King);
  • Van Fellers and others (seizure of British subjects in central America);
  • J Williams (requests interview respecting settlement and occupation of land on Mosquito territory);
  • W Walsh (respecting his leave of absence);
  • King of Mosquito Nation (respecting a new commission issued by him for regulating the affairs of his Kingdom).
