Description

Lieutenant General Sir Robert Murray Keith, K.B., envoy to the Emperor Leopold II. Congress of Sistova. Note (read at the second conference) announcing the British guarantee of the Austro-Prussian agreement at Reichenbach of 27 July 1790. "Original."

Presented by Edith Louisa J., Lady Rogers (née Sykes), C.B.E., to whom it had been given sixty-five years before by her grandmother, Mrs. Sykes (Elizabeth, born in 1792, youngest daughter of William Hay of Renistoun and wife of Colonel William Henry Sykes, M.P.), one of the last members of Sir Robert's branch of the Keith family, in February 1939. For the official copy of this note, enclosed by him in his dispatch no.1, of 4 January 1791, see F.O.7/25. There is another copy, practically identical with the present document, among Sir Robert's own papers in the British Museum (Add. MSS. 35, 503 -35, 583).
