The British Transport Docks Board was established under the Transport Act 1962, which abolished the British Transport Commission. The Board took over certain functions and properties of the former British Transport Commission pertaining to docks and harbours. In 1976 it owned and operated nineteen active ports, including those at Hull and Southampton, but a private bill designed to extend its operations to Felixstowe was defeated in that year. The Board consisted of a chairman, vice-chairman and not more than nine, nor less than four, other members appointed by the Minister of Transport.
