The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) was set up by the Learning and Skills Act 2000, and formally established in 2001. It inherited functions from the Further Education Funding Council and the network of Training and Enterprise Councils. Its remit covered further education and sixth form colleges, work-based training especially for young people, workforce development, adult and community learning, provision of advice and guidance on training for adults, and the provision of education business links.
In January 2008 a new organisation, the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS), was announced as part of the LSC, and officially launched in April 2009. The service was created to bring about a significant growth in the number of employers offering Apprenticeships.
On 1 April 2010, following the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act 2009 which was given Royal Assent on 12 November 2009, the Learning and Skills Council was succeeded by two organisations: the Skills Funding Agency and the Young People's Learning Agency.
