The British Council has been represented in Nigeria since 1943, the representative being based in Lagos from that date.
The council opened various British Council centres, some of which but not all had regional directors, in the following cities: Enugu 1947 to 1967 and again from 1970; Iladan 1947 to 1980; Kano 1949; Kaduna 1959; Port Harcourt 1960 to 1967 and Benin 1965 to 1967.
