The Monthly Review was produced for the British Council's own staff and ran from May 1946 until it was discontinued for reasons of economy in March 1951. The Monthly Review replaced the council's Quarterly Report and monthly Overseas Bulletin. It consisted of reports on council activities at home and overseas, feature articles on the work of London departments and on staff overseas, on special events such as music or drama tours and exhibitions with which the council was associated and on British institutions and organisations. Each edition was illustrated.
In the first commentary, which appeared in the June 1947 issue, the editor made it clear that the object of producing the The Monthly Review was to help council staff 'to perform their duties'. The article continued, 'We should like the Review to become a place for the serious expression of views on the subject known as cultural relations: the exchange between nations of knowledge of the lofty and humble arts of peace and those advances in natural science which are not aimed at the destruction of mankind'.
