A Joint Sub-Committee for Commonwealth University Interchange, consisting of representatives of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals, the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the British Council, held its first meeting in October 1948 to construct a scheme for awarding travel grants to university teachers and post-graduate research workers for visits between universities in Great Britain and Commonwealth countries. The first grants were awarded in 1949 from funds provided by the British Council. The sub-committee was reconstituted as the Committee for Commonwealth University Interchange of the British Council in 1949 and it continued in existence until the merger between the British Council and the Inter-University Council in 1980, when it was dissolved.
