Description

General publicity photographs (captioned).

670 photographs produced by government departments and photograph agencies depicting allied military and civilian personnel, military and political leaders, including the King and Sir Winston Churchill, as well as events and scenes from the Home Front, and liberated areas of Europe, during World War Two.

Individual photographs are described at item level.

Arrangement

These photographs were sorted prior to treatment by TNA's Conservation Department in 1996. As part of this process each photograph was provided a reference that combined its piece reference with its former departmental reference. For example: 'INF 2/44/A1'. These references may now be found on the reverse of each photograph. To aid identification this reference precedes the description of its respective image in the item level entry.

The document is now in two parts (ordered under a single piece reference) with the photographs further sub-divided in to protective folders.

Part 1, comprising item Nos 1 to 481, holds photographs with departmental registration numbers 1-2679.

Part 2, comprising item Nos 482 to 674, holds photographs with departmental registration numbers 2680-2902.

This is not a comprehensive sequence of photographs. The following registration numbers have not been used: 3-7 , 12-19 , 22-24 , 31, 33, 37-41 , 47, 49-51, 53-56, 58-68, 70, 72-79, 91, 97, 99-100, 102-103, 106-107, 109, 111-123, 125-131, 133-134, 136, 138, 140, 142-149, 152-168, 170-183, 185-188, 191-192, 195-201, 203-204, 206-212, 215-218, 220-642, 658-686, 692-1022, 1024-1469, 1486-1496, 1498-1594, 1600-1651, 1658-1837, 1840-2006, 2008-2009, 2017-2044, 2048, 2050-2278, 2283, 2294-2297, 2321-2330, 2392, 2397, 2399, 2403, 2412-2418, 2426, 2431-2435, 2494-2495, 2521-2528, 2546-2552, 2578, 2655-2658, 2668-2669, 2703-2719, 2790-2795, 2806-2815, 2818-2819, 2821-2827, 2846, 2860, 2878-2880.
