Description

Copies, in the hand of Daniel Skinner, of John Milton's Latin Letters of State.

Note
Sewn together, without a cover. 114 pp. Skinner, a friend of Milton, had applied to Williamson (as Secretary of State) in 1676 for permission to publish the letters written by Milton as Secretary for the Latin Tongue under the Commonwealth, as well as the De Doctrina Christiana, both of which had been entrusted to him for publication by Milton himself. Williamson refused to allow publication of such politically subversive items, and managed to confiscate both the treatise and Skinner's copies of the letters, which he secreted in the State Paper Office. The letters were surreptitiously printed from a transcript in 1676, but the treatise lay forgotten in the State Paper Office until 1823, when its rediscovery by Robert Lemon caused a literary storm. More information on the Skinner affair may be found in J Milton French, '"That Late Villain Milton"', in Publications of the Modern Language Association of America, vol lv, no 1, 1940, pp 102-115.
