Description

Despatches (November to December 1915) from Walter Egerton, governor of British Guiana, or in his absence the acting governor, together with correspondence from the Admiralty and the Crown Agents on subjects relating to British Guiana sent during the course of the year. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from government departments is not and details of subjects covered are as follows:

Admiralty:

  • Bauxite concessions not to be granted to foreign companies and terms and conditions under which they should be granted; importance of control over important metals like aluminium being retained by the Imperial Government; bauxite leases; modification of draft lease [see also Confidential Print, 'Bauxite deposits: correspondence',West Indies No. 202, CO 884/12/9]; compensation claims concerning bauxite;
  • New naval wireless station; application of Mr Charles Robert Keyte for appointment to the wireless station at Georgetown, Demerara; necessity for closure or removal of the West India and Pacific Telegraph Company's wireless station; naval wireless stations in British Guiana and Bermuda; acceptance of commercial traffic by naval wireless station;
  • Information respecting Captain Richter and Mr Hansehell [from Intelligence Division]

Crown Agents:

  • Note issue of Royal Bank of Canada;
  • Mr A E P Vanier, British Guiana Government Scholar of 1909;
  • Outstanding notes of the British Guiana Bank in circulation;
  • British Guiana pensioners accepting temporary employment under the War Office or Admiralty;
  • Intention to apply to the War Office for payment of detention allowances in respect of R Thomson, W A Carruthers and J M Reid; further letter asking if any allowances have been paid, if not War Office will pay direct;
  • Loan legislation;
  • Bauxite lease and agreement [with printed copies of draft agreements; see also CO 884/12/9 as above]; reports substance of further discussion with Mr Darling concerning draft lease; further correspondence with Mr Darling;
  • Redemption of immigration bonds;
  • Reports that Dr A Mathey, Government Medical Officer, who has been serving as a lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps, has relinquished his commission;
