Description

Correspondence from 'offices' (government departments) on matters relating to British Guiana. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • House of Commons (Parliamentary questions from Mr Byles concerning the Venezuelan boundary question);
  • Admiralty (HMS Buzzard sent to Demerara at request of governor, report of commanding officer of HMS Buzzard on 'coolie' rioting, enquiry into flying of blue ensign by government scows);
  • Crown Agents (requisition for uniforms, musical instruments etc for the militia, recommends P B Waugh for appointment as mining inspector, agreement with assistant electrician in Postal Department Mr H G Spain, War Office claim for army clothing of Colour Sergeant Mayfield, requests instructions regarding requisition for Post Office stores, submits application of J H Bell for post of government veterinary surgeon, reports that P B Waugh has refused appointment as mining inspector, reports completion and cost of new edition of the laws, agreement with veterinary surgeon J H Bell, proposals for construction of a steam tramway between New Amsterdam and Skeldon, modification of railway extension contract, recommends J R Hosken for post of mining inspector, forwards copy of agreement with Mr Hosken, issue of silver coin for Bank of British Guiana, further correspondence concerning railway extension, agreement with Mr A Chapman drill instructor to militia, loan of £150,000 and issue of 10 year bonds, comments on letter from Demerara Railway Company);
