Description

Despatches from Charles Cameron Lees, governor of British Guiana, items 1-11, and Cavendish Boyle, government secretary, items 12-21 (December1894) together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and individuals sent during the year. Despatches are described at item level; letters from offices and individuals are not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Crown Agents (forwards B P Boyle's application for post of government veterinary surgeon, salary of chief secretary Mr C Boyle, seeks instructions regarding Mr Carrington's estimate for the printing of new edition of statutes, forwards application from A E Cattermole for post of mining inspector, appointment of Mr John Alsing as 'mechanician', forwards letter from Messrs Coode Son & Matthews stating terms on which they would be prepared to send Mr Nagel to report on the improvement of the bar of the Demerara River);
  • India Office (particulars of a tent used for troops);
  • Treasury (payment of stipend of Archdeacon Wyatt, requests quarterly returns respecting changes among the clergy);
  • Foreign Office (reciprocity agreement with United States, with respect to Venezuelan boundary question report complaint of Venezuelan Government regarding misstatements as to gold yield of British Guiana, further correspondence on Venezuelan boundary question, Venezuelan decree respecting foreigners, extradition of criminals escaped from French Guiana, relations between Venezuela and the Netherlands, extradition of 'Recidivistes' from French Guiana, Catholic Mission in Lower Orinoco District, sugar duties in the United States, extradition of habituals criminals who may escape from French territory, Portuguese notice concerning yellow fever in British Guiana, acts of agression by Venezuelan Government, survey of western part of the coast of British Guiana, Venezuelan aggression on Cuyuni River);
  • Home Office (extradition of criminals escaped from French Guiana);
  • War Office (promotion of Colour Sergeant W G Smith of the East Kent Regiment, appointment of Major W Seton as adjutant to militia and musketry instructor, appointment of Colour Sergeant U S Mayfield of the Border Regiment as sergeant major of militia);
  • Incorporated Law Society (enquiry concerning admission of solicitors);
  • Demerara Railway Company (proposed contract for railway construction and explanation of delay);
  • General Post Office (counterfeit or used postage stamps, remission of port dues on mail ships, cannot find suitable person to recommend for appointment as an assistant electrician, recommends appointment of Mr E A H Frost as foreman lineman in Telegraph Department);
  • West India Committee (sugar and gold industries, correspondence respecting the Royal Mail contract, cost of immigrant labour for sugar industry).

  • G C Vyle (reports his return to England and seeks information concerning the termination of his appointment);
