Description

Correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and individuals relating to British Guiana. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Crown Agents (recommends appointment of Mr M K North as assistant colonial civil engineer, suggests that British Guiana and Jamaica should adopt the system used elsewhere in regard to deductions on account of the Widows and Orphans Fund, extension of Mr J C Smellie's scholarship, agreement with Mr Edward Phillips Wood commissioner of mines);
  • Privy Council Office (states that petition of Messrs Willems and Farnum to the Queen in Council should have been forwarded to a London solicitor who would approach the Judicial Committee);
  • Board of Trade (no objection to proposed amendment of Shipping Casualties Ordinance);
  • Foreign Office (protest against occupation of Upper Cuyuni by British Guiana authorities, memorandum relating to the boundary for presentation to the Venezuelan Government by the German Government, instructions to governor relating to Venezuelan proposal for cutting a path marking the Schomburgk line, parcel post convention with United States, request of Portuguese Government for commutation of capital sentence on Manoel Gomes, states that German Government will instruct their representative at Caracas to present memorandum on boundary question, submits draft despatch relating to boundary between Brazil and British Guiana, commercial arrangement with United States, Venezuelan boundary, Venezuelan aggression on the Cuyuni River, money order convention with the United States, forwards copies of despatches from Caracas, reports resignation of the Venezuelan president who has embarked for Martinique, suggested appointment of British vice-consul in Uruari District, diplomatic relations with Venezuela, alleged ill-treatment of British subjects in Yuari mining districts, draws attention to incorrect information in chapter 1 and map in 'Venezuela' - bulletin no 34 of the Bureau of the American Republics, claims of heirs of Joseph Bourda, visit of United States squadron to La Guayra, reports that the president of the Swiss Confederation is to act as arbitrator with respect to differences between France and Venezuela, forwards correspondence with C G Hastings as to receiving a properly accredited envoy from the Venezuelan government);
  • War Office (Treasury has sanctioned supply of rifles etc for the police on condition of colony paying freight charge, appointment of Captain G C de Rinzy as inspector of police, transfer of War Office property to the colonial government);
