Description

Correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) with the exception of the Foreign Office whose correspondence for 1888 is in CO 111/449, and individuals relating to British Guiana. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • House of Commons (Mr Watt's parliamentary question about the treatment of Mr McTurk by Venezuelan authorities, his parliamentary question relating to petition for amendment of constitution, his parliamentary question regarding action of USA in relation to Venezuelan boundary question, his call to necessity for reform of constitution of British Guiana, his parliamentary question relating to Venezuelan newspaper attacks on Great Britain, his parliamentary question concerning the appointment of George Bagot as protector of Indians in 1820);
  • Admiralty (request for Royal Navy ship to proceed to Barima, forwards copy of letter from Captain Beaumont of HMS Canada concerning Venezuelan affairs, defence of British Guiana against attacks by Venezuela, regulations concerning the import of explosives into the colony);
  • Crown Agents (recommends Mr J M Moore as assistant colonial engineer, appointment of Mr J H M Rae as assistant engineer in the Public Works Department, recommends appointment of Mr Pieter Vander Vlies as fascine worker);
  • Council Office (petition of Mr Louis de Souza for permission to appeal to the Privy Council in respect of his imprisonment for contempt of court, quarantine conference);
  • Board of Trade (consider the Merchandise Marks Ordinance to be satisfactory);
  • Treasury (copyright returns, supply of fourpenny pieces and replacement of worn silver coin);
  • War Office (forwards three copies of amended map of British Guiana [[not in item], asks if withdrawal of troops can now take place, questions pending with Venezuela, defence against possible Venezuelan attack in relation to boundary dispute, Guiana Central Railway Company, marines for the defence of Georgetown, will not withdraw troops at present, every effort should be made to improve and increase volunteer force in colony, supply of guns for defence of Georgetown);
