Description

Letters from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) - with the exception of the Foreign Office whose correspondence for the year is in CO 111/442 - and individuals on matters relating to British Guiana. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • House of Commons (parliamentary question referring to alleged dissatisfaction in the colony regarding the boundary and other questions);
  • Admiralty (request for visit of Royal Navy ship to Venezuela coast, protection of British subjects in event of a rupture with Venezuela, proceedings of Royal Navy ships off the Venezuelan coast, pilotage charge imposed on HMS Lily, survey of coast between Georgetown and the Orinoco river);
  • Crown Agents (appointment of Arthur H Butler as assistant engineer in the Public Works Department);
  • Board of Trade (regulation of agreements entered into on engagement of seamen in the colony);
  • Treasury (sanctions expenditure of £300 for cost of referring Venezuelan boundary question to Sir T Twiss or some other eminent jurist);
  • War Office (consents to temporary postponement of withdrawal of troops, defence of Georgetown: states proposed arrangement with regard to armaments);
  • Church of England (recommends Reverend A H Anderson as rector of St Saviours Berbice);
  • West India Association (loan to provide advances to owners of sugar estates);
  • Church of Scotland (recommends Reverend W B Ritchie as minister of St Andrews Georgetown, appointment of Reverend James Muir to St James's parish);
  • Public Record Office (forwards list of documents regarding boundaries with notes);
  • West India Committee (views concerning reduction of Civil Service expenditure, confirms opinions expressed by deputation on relations between Medical and Immigration Departments on subject of Indian migrants and submits objections to Ordinance 9 of 1886);
  • Elected members of British Guiana Court of Policy (deadlock with governor regarding report of medical inspector, alleged unfitness of Dr Williams for the position of medical inspector);
  • General Post Office (appointment of Mr Samuel Vyle as electrician in the Post Office);
  • British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society (forwards petition from J Brown, Samuel Niel, Luke Percival and Rotterdam Cicero 'coloured inhabitants of British Guiana' respecting certain land of which the Government has taken possession);
  • Colonial Office (appointment of Lord Gormanston and Sir Charles Mitchell as governors of British Guiana and the Leeward Islands respectively).
