Description

Letters from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters relating to British Guiana sent during 1882. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Crown Agents (query regarding rate at which dollar is to be calculated in relation to the issue of pensions, fitness of Mr W H Hutchens for post of colonial civil engineer, enquiry from Mr Shorto respecting certain revenue stamps [bound out of order], recommendation of Messrs Hawkshaw that an engineer should be sought by advertisement, fee for medical examination of Dr Minchin, passage money of Mr Frank Banfield, issue of debenture stock, draft debenture bond, complaint regarding price of goods procured through them);
  • Education Department (opinion that Mr C Brookes is the only candidate eligible for the post of assistant master at the Demerara Training Institution);
  • Board of Trade (agreement that an ordinance relating to enquiries into casualties outside colonial waters may be submitted to the Court of Policy in the form suggested);
  • Foreign Office (forwarding note from the Italian ambassador asking if information respecting the Italian colony in Georgetown has been received, cost of relief provided at Oporto to Mrs Rodriques, appointment of Monsieur E d'Oliveyra as Netherlands consulate at Georgetown with jurisdiction over the whole colony, prohibition by Venezuelan Government of sale of an atlas showing an incorrect boundary, states that British proposal regarding boundary is still under consideration by Venezuelan Government, case of Mr J Gonsalves of British Guiana who is destitute and ill in Portugal);
  • West India Committee (water supply to estates, observations on supply of water for estates on east coast of Demerara and the city of Georgetown, administration of the colony, Venezuelan boundary, sea defences, threatened flooding of a portion of the east coast);
  • Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (expresses thanks for report of crown surveyor for 1880 and comments on the neglect of colonial botany, post of curator of museum);
  • West India Association (vacant office of governor);
  • Commissioners L Probyn and Henry Cunynghame (their inquiry into administrator general's department, Miss Daly's claim for refund of a sum recovered from her father's estate by the late Mr Watson, forward their report and details of expenses, deficiency in Mr Watson's accounts).

  • H Cunynghame (expenses while acting as inquiry commissioner, estate of late Mr Nicolson);
  • Henry Francis Corbould (medical appointment, passage expenses);
  • Miss Anna Daly (enquiry regarding a possible claim for a sum obtained from her late father by the administrator general);
  • R J Van Ryett De Groot (resignation from post of clerk in the registrar's office);
  • John A Dalziel (complaint of Mrs Buhôt against him);
  • Edmund Fortescue (complains of probable disallowance of his personal allowance as inspector of prisons);
  • W A Grant (application for post of assistant master at Queen's College, forwards medical certificate);
  • J E Godfrey (application for a medical appointment);
  • Mrs Rebecca Hicks (requests passages for the children of Mr Oscar E Swain);
  • Mrs Hurford (reports arrival in England of Dr Cedric Hurford but that he is too ill to visit Colonial Office, applies for extension of her husband's leave);
  • Luke M Hill (applies for post of secretary of Central Board of Health);
  • Cedric Hurford (his resignation);
  • Cornelius Hendricksen Kortright, governor (his resignation on grounds of ill health);
  • Lang & Company (case of Messrs Smith Brothers fined for false entry in shipping goods);
  • Dr W A Moseley (complaint that he failed to treat an estate employee who subsequently died, request for explanation of secretary of state's disapproval);
  • Edward A Northcote (application for post of stipendiary magistrate);
  • Philip H Nind, auditor general (his resignation);
  • Montague Pearless (date of departure to take up post of supernumerary surgeon);
  • L Probyn (note on colonial balance sheet, accounts of the colony);
  • Reverend J G Pearson (payment of his salary through agents);
  • J A Potbury (application for post of second master at Queen's College);
  • Sandbach & Company (calls attention to the state of affairs in the colony and the necessity for a 'more energetic executive');
  • Henry W Shorto (enquiry about colonial stamps found amongst effects of a deceased person);
  • Andrew B Stewart (claim for refund of certain sums expended on Volunteer Service);
  • Reverend D Smith (his memorial of complaint against governor arising out of some poor law accounts);
