Description (What the record is about)

Part 2 of the report of the Commission of Enquiry into the treatment of immigrants in British Guiana, 1870-1871. Report comments on and criticises the following areas:
- the enforcement of the labour system in British Guiana;
- re-indenture of immigrants;
- mortality and acclimatisation;
- dwellings, drainage and water supply of estates;
- health and the Medical Service;
- the alms house;
- the 'material condition and prosperity' of the immigrants;
- the 'moral condition and improvement' of the immigrants;
- a comparison of wages between immigrants and 'Creole' inhabitants;
- the condition of the sugar industry;
- the colonial subsidy for immigration.
The report concludes with a brief statement of steps necessary to allow the satisfactory continuance of immigration in British Guiana.
