Description (What the record is about)

Contains a rolled file of 1694 and a roll of about 1674 to 1707, both of uncertain purpose. The rolled file contains documents very similar to records of nisi prius but as only one is stamped, it seems likely that it is an issue roll. Making up the issue was the stage of pleading immediately before drawing up the record and, until 1834, it was necessary for the issue to be entered on an issue roll.
The roll covers assizes cases and includes felony and misdemeanour. It is marked 'Records of Queen Anne' and contains what appear to be copies of records of proceedings which are similar in format to records of nisi prius. In each case the full caption of the oyer and terminer commission and the names of the grand jury are given, followed by a recital of the indictment, the date of the trial, the verdict and the sentence. In some cases no trial is mentioned, and in others an acquittal is recorded. Some, but not all, are annotated in such a way as to suggest that the original record was sent to a higher court. It may be that these cases were removed by writ of error or certiorari.
