Up to 2005 Teacher Training Agency
From 2005 Training and Development Agency for Schools
The Teacher Training Agency was established in September 1994 by the Education Act 1994. Its functions were to: fund the provision of teacher training in England; improve the quality and efficiency of all routes into the teaching profession; contribute to raising the standards of teaching; and provide information and advice on teaching as a career.
In September 2005 the Teacher Training Agency was re-launched as the Training and Development Agency for Schools, under the Education Act 2005. As part of its expanded remit, the Training and Development Agency for Schools was responsible for improving the training and development of the entire school workforce.
On 1 April 2012, the Teaching Agency was established as an executive agency of the Department for Education, replacing the Training and Development Agency for Schools and parts of the General Teaching Council for England. The Teaching Agency was responsible for initial teacher training in England, as well as the regulation of the teaching profession.
On 1 April 2013 the Teaching Agency merged with the National College for School Leadership to become the National College for Teaching and Leadership.
In 2018, the National College for School Leadership and its remit and functions were absorbed into the Department for Education, except for its function as teaching regulator, which was passed on to the newly-established Teaching Regulation Agency.
