A copy of 'Rothery's Return' of all appeals in causes of doctrine or discipline made to the High Court of Delegates from its creation by the 25 Hen VIII, c19, AD 1533, until its abolition by the 2 & 3 Wm IV, c92, AD 1832 (Sessional Papers, House of Commons, 1867-1868, p 199).
The Return was compiled by H C Rothery, registrar of the High Court of Admiralty, and Rothery's introduction contains the first serious study of the High Court of Delegates and its records, history, procedures, and records, an index to names of causes and a subject index.
The Return lists all causes relating to ecclesiastical doctrine and discipline heard before the court, giving: date of the appeal; parties to the cause; court or courts appealed from; nature of the cause; names and offices of the judges delegate on the commission; nature and date of the sentence; a description of the nature of the cause and the various stages in its progress.
The Return is not a finding aid to the records of the court in that it does not refer to particular documents, but as it does give the names and dates of causes it can be used to identify particular types of causes which can then be traced through the catalogues and other means of reference to the records.
