Description

Inquisition concerning the church of Ashbourne (Esseburne) [Derbyshire] taken by the archdeacon at the mandate of R[oger Longespee] bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, which found that the church is not vacant but that the rector is R. de Marisc', dean of Lincoln, having been admitted by R[ichard Gravesend] bishop of Lincoln and then instituted, receiving 50 m. as the accustomed pension, which his three predecessors had received by John, recently deceased vicar of Ashbourne. he having died on the eve of Easter last [3 April 1260]. It also found that the dean of Lincoln is the patron and that Roger de Rolueston' presented Nicholas of Ashbourne, who held the rectory for thirty years and more, whereupon William de Thorniaco, then dean of Lincoln, held it to his own uses by the grace of Alexander, then bishop of Lincoln, and he presented Walter de Kayham, chaplain, to the vicarage. Thereafter, Roger de Weseham, dean of Lincoln, presented John de Bretham, chaplain, who held it until death, paying 50 m. to the dean and 30 m. to Walter de Kayham in the name of a simple benefice. The estimated value of the chapel henceforth was 80 m. annually, but that now the king has presented P. of Winchester, clerk.
