Description

Transcript of documents relating to a case touching the rectory or prebend of Llanarth (Cardiganshire) with the chapel of Llanina (Llannyna).

Recitation of the grant by letters patent of 10 June 1284 to Thomas Bek, bishop of St. David's, of the advowson of the churches of Llanina and Llannarth with thirty-three other churches which the bishop might appropriate to his cathedral of St. David's (Pembrokeshire) and the church of Abergwili (Carmarthenshire) in order to make prebends.

Recitation of a decree by the bishop as patron and ordinary of the church of Llanddewi-Brefi (Llandewybr') [Cardiganshire] for the establishment of a college of thirteen canons (ordinances given) endowed with the churches of Llangybi (Llangyby) [Cardiganshire], Llanbadarn Trefeglwys (Trefeglus) [Cardiganshire], Estrate, Llannerchancon' and Carrog (Carronk) [Cardiganshire], with a further four churches provided for the deacons, namely Llanwenog (Llanwennock Blanporth) [Cardiganshire], Betws (Bettus) [Cardiganshire], Bydowill' and Llanbadarn Odwyn (Llanpadarn Odin) [Cardiganshire], and four to the sub-deacons, namely Llanbedy, Trelleig, Llannarth and Carron. Approved in chapter, 18 November 1287.

Recitation that the bishop and his cathedral chapter appropriated the church of Llannarth with the chapel of Llanina, 11 May 1290.

Recitation of the presentation by Edward I of Richard Wrott, clerk, to the church of Llanarth in his twenty-seventh regnal year and his grant to David [Martin], then bishop of St. David's that his former grant would be restored.

Recitation of the grant by Edward III to John [Thoresby], bishop of St. David's confirming the previous grants made to Thomas Bek regarding his foundation. 12 February 1348.

Recitation of the grant by Edward III in his forty-sixth year [1372-3], confirming the annexation of the church of Llangenelach to the collegiate church of Llangadock, afterwards translated to Abergwili, by which the bishop of St. David's came to exercise the right to be dean of every collegiate church within his diocese, with recitation of the visitation of Llanddewi-Brefi in 19 Henry VII [1503-4] in which the bishop's position as dean was reasserted and confirmed.

Recitation that in 27 Henry VIII [1535-6] the church of Llanarth was returned and certified by the twelve commissioners appointed to examine the spiritualities and temporalities of the diocese of St. David's, with further recitation of the sale to farm in 34 Henry VIII [1542-3] by William [Barlow], bishop of St. David's, Thomas Lloyde, the chanter, and the whole chapter, of the church and parsonage of Llanarth with the chapel of Llanina to Sir Thomas Johns, a lease which endures.
