Transcripts of documents relating to disputed tithes in Climping (Sussex).
1. Transcript of a petition to King and Council from the abbess and convent of Almeneches (Orne, France) showing that they have the parish church of Climping (Sussex) in the diocese of Chichester with the greater and lesser tithes from lands in that parish, but that John Clenche, who claimed to be parson of the chapel of Cudlow (extinct) in the parish of Climping, seized those tithes by force of arms; wherefore the abbess has impleaded John in the Court Christian, for which reason John came into Chancery and suggested that the chapel of Cudlow was in fact a church and purchased a writ to that effect to the prejudice of the right of the parish church of Climping. The abbess prays that the verdict of the Court Christian be upheld. [French]
2. Transcript of a writ from the Official of the consistory court of Canterbury to the archdeacon of Chichester, reciting the petition of the abbess and convent of Almeneches and the accusations aganist John Clenche but also against John de Vienne, former rector of the chapel of Cudlow, who have despoiled the tithes pertaining to the lands within the bounds of the parish of Climping and of the demesne fee of Luke de Vienne, deceased, and despite ecclesiastical censure have continued to despoil tithes of corn, wherefore appeal was made to the court of Canterbury, and ordering the archdeacon to prevent John and John from continuing their activities and cite them peremptorily to appear at St. Mary Arches, London, on the sixth day after St. Faith to receive justice in the tuitory appeal of the abbess and convent. London, 7 Ides [7] September 1310. [Latin]
3. Transcript of the writ by which Edward II notified the Dean of Arches and his commissary that Mary de Vienne had indicated to him that whereas John Clenche holds the church of Cudlow of her advowson, the abbess and convent of Almeneches, claiming two parts of the same church as of their own advowson, brought him into a plea in the Court Christian, and whereas it is manifest that Mary would suffer loss to her advowson hereby if the abbess's case is upheld, and order prohibiting him from holding such plea until discussion had been had in the king's court concerning the right of advowson as pleas concerning the advowson of churches pertain to the crown and the royal dignity. Renfrew, 15 October 1310. [Latin]
