Description

Return by Ralph [Baldock], bishop of London of an inquisition taken by writ (attached) of King Edward II [20 February 1310] concerning ordinances for the vicarage of Chingford (Essex), which the Knights Templar recognised as having been put to their own uses, to the effect that by the authority of Richard of Gravesend, formerly bishop of London, and with the will and consent of the Templars and the vicar at that time, the vicarage was divided into portions, which would henceforth remain to the vicarage, and that these had been in the peaceful possession of Reginald, the present vicar for some time:

  • the manse pertaining to the rectory, with the hall, chambers and other dwellings and a small croft of half an acre with gardens;
  • [...] over the Lea (Leye) in Longelonde formerly of the rectory [...] Brandeshakelmerch';
  • nine acres of arable land with appurtenances in two [...];
  • an annual rent of 11d. from the tenement of John of Kent;
  • a [...]before the gate of the manse;
  • four quarters of wheat and four quarters of oats, to be rendered in equal portions at Michaelmas and Easter.
