Description

Institutions to the church of Brean (Somerset), 1322-1418.

Letters patent of Thomas [Beckington], bishop of Bath and Wells notifying that the following had been instituted as rectors of the parish church of Brean (Somerset) according to the registers of the diocese, with accompanying evidence:

  • John Barbe, clerk, admitted on 18 December 1322 by John Droxford (Drokenesford), former bishop of Bath and Wells, at the presentation of John Burcy, patron, he having acquired the patronage from Robert de Berkeley;
  • William de Styntescomb', priest, admitted on 17 March 1331/2 by Ralph of Shrewsbury (Salopia), former bishop of Bath and Wells, at the presentation of Thomas de Berkeley, knight;
  • Inspeximus of a quitclaim by Walter Burcy to Thomas, Lord Berkeley of the isle of Stepelholme [Steep Holme, Somerset] and lands in Upphul [Uphill, Somerset] and Cruccheston' [Christon, Somerset], with the perpetual advowson of the church of Brean [Witnessed by John de Clyveden', John de Wroxale, knights, Walter de Rodeney, Edmund de Lyons, William Arthur and others, at Portbury (Somerset), 8 March, 6 Edward III [1332];
  • Henry Russhel of Fanhope, deacon, admitted on 24 December 1334 by Ralph of Shrewsbury (Salopia), former bishop of Bath and Wells, at the resignation of William de Styntescomb' and at the presentation of Thomas, Lord Berkeley;
  • Nicholas Houghton', priest, admitted on 2 December 1361 by Ralph of Shrewsbury, former bishop of Bath and Wells, at the presentation of Maurice de Berkeley, knight;
  • Walter Burnel, chaplain, admitted on 11 March 1375/6 by John Harewell, former bishop of Bath and Wells, at the presentation of Katherine de Berkeley;
  • John Smyth, priest, admitted on 9 March 1392/3 by Ralph Erghum, former bishop of Bath and Wells, at the death of Walter Burnel and at the presentation of John Berkeley, knight, general attorney of Thomas Berkeley, knight;
  • John Talbot, priest, admitted on 31 May 1418 by Nicholas Bubwith (Bubbewyth'), former bishop of Bath and Wells, at the death of Richard Audrey, the last incumbent, and at the presentation of John Baysham, clerk, and John Throgmerton', esquire, attorneys of Richard de Beauchamp, earl of Warwick, absent overseas, in right of his wife, the daughter and heir of Thomas, Lord Berkeley.
