Description

Documents relating a dispute concerning the church of Bexley (Kent).

1. Mandate of Boniface [of Savoy], archbishop of Canterbury to his official, Master Hugh de Mortimer (Mortuo Mar'), committing to him the dispute which has arisen between the archbishop and the prior and convent of Holy Trinity, London concerning the church of Bexley (Bixela), at the petition of Master Rostagnus, papal sub-deacon and chaplain, commanding him to give assent to the ordinance Master Rostagnus will make in this matter, on condition that no prejudice is done to Master William de Papia. [10 February 1255];

2. Notification by Geoffrey, perpetual vicar of the church of Bexley (Bixle) in the diocese of Rochester, of the oath he had sworn before William Aynel, then prior of Holy Trinity, London, Ralph de Arcubus and Richard de Wimbisse, canons of the same, John de Stowe, chaplain, John de Bladyndone, John de Grauele, Edmund de Colham, clerks and others, that would would not henceforth accept anything contrary to an ordinance made in the dispute between himself and the prior and convent of Holy Trinity, London, made concerning the vicarage by Stephen [Langton], archbishop of Canterbury, he having occupied certain tithes in the church pertaining to the prior and convent. [8 February 1288];

3. Certificate of the dean of Shoreham to Simon [Meopham], archbishop of Canterbury relating to the admission and institution of Laurence de la Ryde, priest, to the perpetual vicarage of Bexley after an exchange made with a residentiary prebend in the royal chapel of St. Martin the Great, London, that he instituted Laurence to the vicarage in person on 14 November 1331 [17 November 1331];

4. Certificate of [Aymer de Valence] the bishop-elect of Winchester to Pope Innocent IV concerning his appointment [dated 17 April 1254] to cite the prior and convent of Holy Trinity, London and the archbishop of Canterbury to appear before him within four months in their dispute over the archbishops's alleged despoilation of the church of Bexley, which the Pope had committed to the dean and chancellor [of Chichester] and Master William de Alta Villa, canon of Chichester, but a decision remains to be made, that, in his absence from England, his official, by H. prior of Reading, cited B[oniface of Savoy] archbishop of Canterbury and the prior. No one on behalf of the archbishop appeared in Canterbury to plead the citation and the prior would not continue. The bishop-elect caused Master William de Papya to be cited by A. prior of Southwark, who executed the citation in person at Bexley and caused Master William to have administration of his property. [28 August 1254];

5. Letters patent of Master Rostandus, papal sub-deacon and chaplain, and Master Hugh de Mortimer, official of B[oniface of Savoy] archbishop of Canterbury, confirming the ordinance they had made concerning the dispute between the archbishop and the prior and convent of Holy Trinity, London, that the archbishop agreed not to molest the prior and convent in their possession of Bexley church and that they shall have and hold it peacefully, saving any right that Master William de Papya has acquired in the same church. The archbishop received the prior and convent into his grace and remitted his ire towards them. [25 April 1286];

6. Notarial instrument drawn up by Bartholomew Creben, public notary, notifying the judgement of Master Rainerus of Viterbo, papal chaplain and auditor, in the dispute between the prior and convent of Holy Trinity, London, and Master William de Papia, clerk, and his award of possession of the church of Bexley, tithes and damages to the prior and convent. [6 January 1255].
