Description

Documents relating to Ramsey Abbey (Huntingdonshire).

1. Memorandum of a petition from the Queen's tenants within the towns of Stoke Ferry, Wretton and Wereham (Norfolk) upon suit to her council by Robert Heigryme and John Johnson, tenants and representatives of the towns, that, despite reassurances from the abbot of Ramsey, lord of Clackclose hundred (Norfolk), that his officers would no longer interfere with the Queen's tenants until he had reported to her council what interest he had in the tenants and their possessions, Richard Eawsell, the abbot's bailiff, distrained bullocks of serveral inhabitants of Wereham (Wireham, Wyreham) for amercements assessed in the sheriff's tourn for the township's non-appearance at the tourn although they were only ever accustomed to appear before the Queen's steward at her yearly court at Stoke Ferry. They sued a writ to Sir Thomas Bedingfeld and in order to obtain discharge had to agree to a bond with Eawsell [rot. 1, mm. 1-2];

2. Memorandum of a petition from the Queen's tenants within the towns of Stoke Ferry, Wretton and Wereham (Norfolk) that although these towns form part of the Queen's honour of Clare and that, therefore and by the king's grant on the authority of parliament, they had return and execution of writs therein, William Drurie of Watlington (Norfolk), labourer, and John Kyng of West Dereham (Norfolk), servants of Richard Eausell, entered Wereham on 9 January [1532] and arrested Richard Oker of Buxton (Bukton) at the suit of John Waller, taking 2s. 4d. from him for their fees contrary to the liberty of the honour and the king's grant [rot. 1, m. 2];

3. Roll of (apparently contemporary) extracts from the Pipe Roll, 11 Henry VIII [1519-1520] in the Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire rotulets, recording the accounts with the king made by Thomas Warley and William Grace, the abbot of Ramsey's bailiffs, for the issues of their bailiwick and various debts over the accounting year 11-12 Henry VIII [rot. 2];

4. Roll of (apparently contemporary) extracts from the Pipe Roll, 6-9 Henry VIII [1514-1519] in the Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire rotulets, recording the accounts with the king made by William Grace, the abbot of Ramsey's bailiff, for the issues of his bailiwick, and various debts over the accounting years 6-10 Henry VIII [rot. 3].
