Description

Certificate to the king by Richard Symm, under the privy seal of W [William March] bishop of Bath and Wells, treasurer, that Cecily Banestre has resigned the priory of Wintney (Hampshire) into the hands of the constable of Odiham castle (Hampshire), who has taken it into the king's hands. Return of an inquisition taken at Odiham on April 6 [1295] into the patronage of the priory of Wintney before Peter of Leicester (de Leycestr') and John de Kirkeby, on the oaths of Walter de Euereslegh', Thomas de Warblington', John de Popham, Richard of Winchester, knights, Nicholas de [...], William de Frollebur', William de La Rude, Nicholas de Duppehale, Walter de la Purye, John de [...], Richard le Beel and Hugh de Shirefeld', jurors. The sub-prioress claimed that as nuns of the Cistercian Order they were not subject to any authority or keeper during vacancy, that the house had been founded by Geoffrey fitz Peter to be held in free alms, and that they hold certain lands and tenements of the heirs of Richard de Cifrewast in Herriard (Hampshire) in free alms, and certain other lands and tenements in Welle of Geoffrey de Vengham. They hold nothing of the king. Responding for the king, Robert de Harewedon', constable of Odiham castle, said that Henry II, the great-grandfather of the king, had given the manor of Hartley Wintney (Hertelye) to Alice de Lungevile, to be held in chief with suit of the king's court at Odiham. Geoffrey fitz Peter succeeded Alice and granted the manor to the monks to be held by the same service. The jurors, however, returned that the nuns held nothing from the king, and that they held their lands in free alms as propounded by the sub-prioress.
