Description

Documents concerning the dispute as to the right of election of a prior of the cathedral priory of Winchester (Hampshire).

Final settlement, at the arbitration of Edward I, of the dispute before John de Pontoise (Pontissara), bishop of Winchester, and the prior and convent of the cathedral priory of St Swithun, Winchester, concerning the right to elect a prior and the title to certain disputed manors, lands and properties: that in times of vacancy of the cathedral priory of St Swithun, the priory will exercise right of free election and that the bishop or his successors will confirm the election; the new prior will have free administration to acquire and dispose of all goods, property and rights, receive clerks and those fleeing the secular arm and remove obedientiaries without requiring the bishop's consent; all secular offices both within and outside the priory are to be held for life, and the prior may remove and choose new officers freely; when the priory is vacant the chapter will have custody of all property, goods and laws and receive all issues and revenues; saving, however, to the bishop and his successors the advowson or patronage of the priory, so that in times of vacancy the bishop and his successors shall have an advocate who will be received and accommodated by the convent; the prior and convent quitclaim to the bishop and his successors by charter the manors of Droxford (Hampshire), Alverstoke [Aylwarestok'] (Hampshire) and Hauehonte (unidentified) with the hamlet of Knowle (Cnowel).
