Description

Documents concerning the dispute as to the right of election of a prior of the cathedral priory of Winchester (Hampshire).

Letters patent of Nicholas [of Ely], bishop of Winchester, and John de Dureville or d'Urevilla, prior of St Swithun's cathedral priory, Winchester, and the convent, attesting to the mutual submitting to the arbitration of William of Southampton, prior provincial of the Friars Preacher in England, and Antony Bek, archdeacon of Durham, and to the spiritual coercion of the archbishop of Canterbury on penalty of excommunication and forfeiture of temporalities to the king [Winchester, 17 July 1278], but, since the prior provincial has died in the meantime and the archdeacon of Durham does not wish to arbitrate alone, they mutually grant him that he might continue and conclude arbitration in this matter and that they mutually submit to his arbitration and judgement on penalty of £10000, the arbitration to take place either at Winchester in Hyde abbey or in Westminster abbey, in Reading abbey, the parish church at Woodstock or the parish church at Windsor.
