Transcript of two letters compiled by public notary and exhibited in judgement in the dispute concerning the right to elect a prior of the cathedral priory of St Swithun, Winchester:

  • 1. Letter of the sub-prior and convent of St Swithun's revoking all previous actions against Brother Andrew of London, their prior, given his efforts in representing them in defending the rights and liberties of their church, in return for his renunciation of expenses incurred in suits against them, acknowledging him to be their lawfully elected prior [Winchester, 30 May 1276];
  • 2. Letter of Brother Andrew of London, prior of St Swithun's, remitting and renouncing the expenses he had incurred in his dispute with Brother Valentine, monk of St Swithun's, and N [Nicholas of Ely]. bishop of Winchester as per the judgement of the bishop and archdeacon of Rochester, papal deputies in the dispute over the prioracy of St Swithun's, and later by the judgement of the prior of St Frideswide, Oxford, principal papal judge-delegate, and the chancellor of the university of Oxford, the archdeacon of Middlesex, and then by the dean of St Mary Arches, London, the archdeacon of Essex and Master John de Anagnia, papal chaplain, principal judges deputed by the pope. [London, 4 June 1276].

Brother Andrew retains the first letter and the second is in the hand of a certain monk of Winchester, Brother William de la Brome, proctor of the sub-prior and convent, who acts for Brother Andrew as prior in the Roman Curia, in order to recover the prioracy for him, for which he has been admitted.
