Transcript of the proceedings before Stephen bishop of Palestrina (Prenestina) [István Bánesa] and Giovanni Gaetano Orsini, cardinal-deacon of San Niccolo in Carcere Tulliano, papal judges at Naples, on 24 May [1255], detailing: the powers of attorney granted to Peter Gaudini, proctor of Aymer de Lusignan, bishop-elect of Winchester, and William, proctor of the sub-prior and convent of Winchester cathedral priory; the libel and responses presented by the parties in their dispute relating to the alleged seizure and occupation of the goods of the priory by the bishop-elect; the assignment of terms to hear judgement; the presentation of further articles concerning the ejection of certain monks by the bishop-elect, actions against the priory's obedientiaries and the usurpation of an annual rent from St. Giles fair, Winchester, of the right of presentation to churches and to fish in their own waters, take timber from their own woods, or take beasts there. The proctor of the prior requests restitution of manors and their fruits, up to 20000 marks, which the bishop-elect had sequestrated: Burghclere (Burgclera), Ashmansworth (Esmereowolt'), South Stoneham (Staniam), Woodhay, Horton, Bitterne, Merdon, Hursley (Hersol'), Stonden', the pasture of Compton (Cumpton'), with the churches - where the prior and convent act as patron - and Taunton (Tanton'), East Meon (Estmon') and Wargrave.
