Privileges of St. Martin le Grand, London, granted by kings of England going back into the Saxon period and popes, which have recently been breached by Philip [Malpas] and Robert [Marchal], late sheriffs of London, and other royal officials. This particularly relates to right of sanctuary in the case of John Shenefeld and his wife, Joyce, and Rose Burnet, wife of Thomas, against whom a suit was taken out before the justices of the common pleas for colluding to obtain £360 worth of goods and chattels at the suit of Henry Somer, chancellor of the Exchequer, Robert Caundysshe and others, wherein Thomas Doffhous, sheriff of London, returned that he could not enter the sanctuary, in the case of a £40 debt of John Portyngton, where a similar return was made Simon Seman, sheriff of London, in the case of Richard Hertanger extracted from sanctuary by Thomas Stone, porter to Thomas Bernet, at the suit in a plea of debt of Thomas Acton, gentleman.
