Description

Deeds of surrender of the charters of the priory of Kidwelly (Carmarthenshire).

Commission to John Fitzjames, knight, chief justice and John Horsey, knight, to inquire into all articles and instruments mentioned in the annexed documents, and to certify the court of Augmentations in the octaves of Hilary next. Dated 27 November 1536.

Articles and instruments made for the king's commissioners:

  • To summon the prior of Kidwelly, pretended to be a cell of the abbey of Sherborne (Dorset), before them, as well as the abbot of Sherborne;
  • To cause the abbot and prior to swear to declare and show to the commissioners all charters, writings, evidences, account books, indentures, leases, court rolls and muminents in their custody or that of the chief governors or any other person, concerning the lands, tenements and possessions of the priory of Kidwelly, and to cause them to deliver such evidence up to them;
  • To summon before them any other person in whose hands any other such evidences remain, and to cause them to deliver them up;
  • To certify the court under their seals at the day set down in their commission.

Inventory of the evidences and writings relating to the priory of Kidwelly:

  • Two instruments concerning parcels of land in Kidwelly given to the abbot and convent of Sherborne by Bishop Roger and with the consent of King Henry;
  • Five leases granted by the predecessors of the abbot and convent of Sherborne concerning divers parcels of land of the cell of Kidwelly;
  • Agreement and concord made concerning disputed tithes between the prior of Kidwelly as proctor of the abbot and convent of Sherborne and the parson of Llandefeilog (Carmarthenshire);
  • Deed of gift of Henry, duke of Lancaster to the abbot and convent of Sherborne and the prior of Kidwelly of an annual rent of 6s. 8d. [French];
  • Deed for housbote, ploubote and haybote [French];
  • Deed made by Henry, duke of Lancaster to the prior of Kidwelly discharging him of suit of the hundred court;
  • Deed of gift of John Gerneis to the abbot and convent of Sherborne concerning a parcel of land in Kidwelly;
  • Deed of gift of Geoffrey Dun' to the abbey church of Sherborne and to the prior of Kidwelly concerning a house in Kidwelly;
  • Deed of Hawise de Mapulderham, widow, to the abbot and convent of Sherborne concerning a piece of land in Kidwelly;
  • Arbitration of Hugh Huntley in a dispute between the prior of Kidwelly and Genkin Collin concerning a lease deemed to be void in that it was made by the prior's predecessor without consent as it is a cell of the monastery of Sherborne;
  • Grant of King Richard concerning the quittance of the prior of Kidwelly;
  • Inquisition taken by command of Henry, duke of Lancaster for certain bounds between Pembrey and Kidwelly, with an exemplification of the bishop of St. Davids;
  • Two decrees concerning the payment of tithes made between the prior of Kidwelly and the secular college of Leicester, with a commission and indenture concerning the same;
  • Two indentures concerning the vicar's stipend of Kidwelly;
  • Deed of Robert Dun with a release of Thomas Dun, his son;
  • Two obligations of John Bottler to the prior of Kidwelly, with a release and a copy of a writing against the prior;
  • An exemplification under the chancery seal of Kidwelly concerning certain liberties belonging to the prior of Kidwelly;
  • Deed of Richard Abbinon with a release;
  • Deed of Roger de Cobicot; deed of John, son of Alexander Cole;
  • Deed of Rhys ap Gruffudd with a release and another deed of William Vachan;
  • Agreement of Geoffrey, prior of Kidwelly and the parson of Pembrey;
  • Testimonial concerning the agreement between Prior Geoffrey and the parson of Pembrey;
  • Deed of John [of Gaunt], king of Castile, duke of Lancaster, granting the tenants of the prior of Kidwelly the liberty that they might bake and brew;
  • Two bills of account made to Iscoide Moris for a yearly rent of 6s. 8d.;
  • Induction of the current prior;
  • Two court books and a book of copies, leases and indentures;
  • Ten rentals, nineteen court rolls and sixty copies and indentures;
  • Grant made to the abbot and convent of Sherborne and the prior of Kidwelly in order to purchase in mortmain [Paper], with an old copied annexed to it;
  • Two presentations and a pardon made by King Henry to the prior of Kidwelly;
  • Divers petitions made to the lords of Kidwelly by priors of Kidwelly;
  • Deed of exchange of lands;
  • Inquisition taken for the division of the parish of Kidwelly and the parish of Pembrey;
  • Commission made by the bishop of St. Davids to the prior of Kidwelly.

Certificate of John Fitzjames, knight, chief justice, and John Horsey, knight, that on 30 December 1536, at Sherborne, they swore both the abbot of Sherborne and prior of Kidwelly according to the articles in their commission, and that the abbot and prior delivered all such evidences and writings before the court to be examined.
