Description

Petition of Joyce [Bickeley], prioress of Catesby (Northamptonshire), to Thomas Wolsey, papal legate, cardinal archbishop of York, chancellor of England.

She complains that whereas William Staverton, gentleman, was seised of two yards of land with appurtenances in Drayton (Northamptonshire) in his demesne as of fee of Dame Aveline Steynton, formerly prioress of Catesby, by homage, fealty and 20s. rent, and that whereas Dame Aveline, being seised thereof in 2 Richard III [1484-5], enfeoffed Thomas Ilston, formerly prior of St. Augustine, Daventry (Northamptonshire), whose successor is now Alexander Colenz, the service and rent has been unpaid since 2 Richard III despite frequent demands being made and despite the prioress distraining the beasts of Edward Pettlyng, under-tenant of Prior Ilston. who then sued a repleve against her. A trial brought by a writ nisi prius ensued, but Edward Pettlyng was placed as co-litigant, delaying the trial further in the expectation that the jury would have found for the prioress. She requests right be done to her and a sub poena be issued to Prior Alexander to compel him to answer.
