Description

Rights of the leper hospital of Maiden Bradley (Wiltshire).

Memorandum reciting the election, on 12 September 1306 before Simon de Gandavo, bishop of Salisbury, in his manor of Sherborne (Dorset), of John de Tilshead or Tydolvesside, canon, as prior of the Augustinian priory of Maiden Bradley, upon presentation by Henry de Edyndon, canon and proctor of the same house, and the assignment to them of a day to appear in the conventual church of Reading (Berkshire), with a further postponement to St. Giles church, Reading, at the command of the official of the diocese of Salisbury. With a transcript of the writ of induction for the new prior from Peter Peryton or Per', canon of Salisbury, official of the bishop of Salisbury, William de Chyverel and Henry de Edyndon, canons, acting as his proctors, the confirmation of these letters, the letters for his installation as prior [Reading, 8 October], and the letters to the patrons of Maiden Bradley, J. de Ripariis, knight, and John Byset for delivery of the temporalities [Reading, 8 October].

Recitation by William, prior of the hospital of female lepers of Maiden Bradley of the grant of protection offered by the see of Canterbury in all matters, to be read before the brethren on 6 February 1344/5, in the presence of Thomas de Sutton, clerk, John de Honynton, clerk, John de Tarenta, Richard atte Mulle, William de Cristi ecclesia.

Petition to Pope [Clement VI] submitted by the prior, brethren and sisters of the [female] leper hospital of Maiden Bradley that if [Wulstan de Bransford] the bishop of Worcester shall truly find that the parish church of Kidderminster (Worcestershire), of which the prior, brethren and sisters are the rightful patrons, had previously been justly appropriated by them, he will restore them to their right and ancient estate by papal authority, having reserved a suitable portion in order that a perpetual vicar might be ordained and so that they might have and possess it as the first founder intended to their own uses, in order that should Master John [...], currently rector, cede the rectory, they might freely enter as their possession. They had been so endowed as their house lies close to the royal highway by Selwood forest (Somerset) and the land is sterile bringing them into poverty, their beasts have suffered murrain and pestilence. Annotated that when the appropriation fell to them, by their simplicitas and ignorance they presented divers, secular persons to the same church successively when it became vacant for over forty years. A copy of this schedule with this addition was handed by Master John de Ildesle to Master Andrew Sapiti, the addition having been made by R. de Worthe.
