Description

Fragment of an early cartulary [of Lewes priory (Sussex)] relating to lands granted in Norfolk and Sussex. 1. Lands and tithes pertaining to [...] and a garden which Hugh son of Hugh gave; 2. Ralph, brother of Hugh son of Hugh, conveyed churches to the priory when he died, and they render 6s. in tithes; 3. At Holma (unidentified) Merleswen rendered 32d. for the land he held from them of the gift of Hugh son of Hugh; 4. Tithes of Creake (Norfolk) of the gift of the first earl [William de Warenne] render 3s.; 5. William de Pigthenie gave a garden in Thetford (Norfolk) which renders 12d.; 6. Walter de Grantcurt gave two churches at Burnham (Norfolk), one dedicated to St. Mary and the other to St. Peter, and lands and tithes pertaining to them, which Philip de Warenne holds for two marks while he lives; 7. Walter de Grantcurt gave the church of St. Laurence, Harpley (Norfolk), and lands and tithes pertaining to it, rendering one mark; 8. In the same vill (of Harpley, Norfolk), Walter del Bec gave, and placed upon the altar of St. Laurence, the tithes of that share which he had there and twelve acres of land, for which tithe and land William de Manerio renders one mark; 9. At Gayton (Norfolk) the younger earl [William, 2nd earl of Warenne] gave eight solidates of land which William de Herbertcurt held, and in the same vill Alwin Tretsalt renders 24d. for two acres of the same land held separately and for a certain garden; and in the same vill 4d. from Pinel; 10. At Allington [?in St John without Lewes] (Sussex) the priory has 24s. 6d. of the land of Azar the priest; 11. The priory has 16s. from the marsh of Wootton (Norfolk) which pertains to Heacham (Norfolk); and 2s. from certain land which is there; and two solidates of land in same vill of Wootton which Seman son of Godwin holds; 12. William, second Earl Warenne gave the priory Heacham (Norfolok) at the death of his father, who had requested through his barons that he should give it; 13. Roger de Pavelli renders 6s. for tithe of the gift of the earl; 14. William, sheriff / vicar of Lewes gave [...] for three terms, in each term £9 13s. 11d., namely £29 21d. overall; 15. Roger de Suthwercha similarly for three terms, in each term £4 6d. at least, namely £12 18d. at least overall; 16. List of renders: Hefo[...], Isaac, 32½d., Alfred, 26d., Golston, 26d., Hugh Cook or 'Cocus', 26d., William Francigena, 26d., the master cook, 32½d., the second, third and fourth cooks, each 26d. [remainder lost].
