Description

Inventory of the possessions of the Benedictine nunnery of St. Leonard, Guînes (Pas-de-Calais, France) attached to a petition to the King and Council of England.

  • The tithes and oblations at the altars of St. Pierre & St. Bertin, Guînes, of Espelleques and St. Blaise (Melleque) (Pas-de-Calais), the chapel of the castle of Guînes and the abbey church of St. Leonard;
  • 28 strikes of wheat from the mills of the county of Guînes;
  • Toll of 1d. upon each laden ship passing and returning through the estate of Guînes;
  • All tithes issuing within the parishes of St. Bertin, St. Pierre & St. Metard, Guînes, given to them by Guillaume, brother of the comte de Guînes;
  • 100s. of rent in fee given to them upon the mills of Guînes, given to them by Arnoul, comte de Guînes;
  • Seven and a half measures of land lying in the parish of Guînes between the wood of la Dune and the highway of le Dreue, acquired from Gerard de la Bare, as appears by letters of Arnoul, comte de Guînes;
  • The presentation and gift of the schools of Guînes, as appears by letters of the comte de Guînes;
  • The right to fell about 59 trees called 'Ries' from which the chapel of the said church was constructed;
  • Four and a half measures of land or territory in Guînes acquired from Gerard de la Bare and Chretienne, his wife, as appears by letters of the comte de Guînes;
  • The nuns demand all lands and inheritance given to them by Manesse, comte de Guînes, confirmed by Arnoul, comte de Guînes;
  • Seventeen measures of land lying at le Braque given to them by Comte Manesse;
  • The gift and presentation of the chapelry of the leperhouse at Espelleques and its appurtenances, as appears by the letters of the comtesse d'Eu and Guînes;
  • Five and a half measures of land acquired from Jean Wytyng of Calais lying between the abbey church and the Maison Dieu of Guînes, as appears by the letters of Raoul, comte d'Eu and Guînes;
  • Rents and rights in the parish of Boudrecque (unidentified) in a placed called 'Hoseacre' of the said land, franchises and lordships which might pertain to the comtes de Guînes, as appears in letters of Simon, son of the lord of Coquelle (Pas-de-Calais);
  • 21 polkyns of wheat acquired from Simon, lord of Coquelle from fourteen measures of land lying in the parish of Boudrique called 'Hoseacre';
  • Three polkyns of wheat in the parish of Markene (lost, Pas-de-Calais) given to the nuns by Raou de Canquelle from five measures of land lying in that parish;
  • Two measures of land lying on either side of the stream which runs from Markene to the mill of Nielles (unidentified), acquired by the nuns from Jacques Baron, as appears in letters of the comte de Guînes;
  • Ten bushels of wheat from four measures of land lying in the valley of Nielles, acquired from Henri Querbel, as appears by letters of Simon, lord of Couqelle;
  • Six polkyns and seven bushels of wheat acquired from Bondyn de Nordin upon certain lands being in the territory of Axles (Pas-de-Calais), as appears by the letters of the lord of Axles;
  • A dwelling where there used to be the mill of Nielles acquired from the lord of Nielles;
  • A polkyn of wheat acquired from Margire wife of Wystaxe du Reginde upon certain inheritance lands in the parish of Axles;
  • 21 polkyns of wheat acquired from William de Canquelle, knight, upon fourteen measures of land lying in the parish of Boudrikes, as appears by letters of the lord of Couquelle;
  • 11s. 6d. acquired from Thomas called Siguette, then tenant of Thomas Nielles, baron of Guînes, to be taken from three measures of meadow lying in the parish of Guînes;
  • A polkyn of wheat acquired from Wystaxe called Bochart, tenant of Thomas Nielles, baron of Guînes, to be taken from three parts of a measure of land lying in the parish of Nielles;
  • A goose, a capon, a hen and 25 eggs from one measure of land lying in the parish of 'Nordrique' (unidentified), as appears by letters of Bawdyn Dales;
  • Four polkyns of wheat acquired from William Carnifex of Guînes from certain lands lying in the parish of Couquelle, as appears by letters of the lord of Couqelle;
  • One polkyn of wheat given by Simon de Couqelle from four vierendeux of land lying in the parish of Nordrique;
  • Three polkyns of wheat acquired from William son of Brandequyn, tenant of Thomas Nielles, baron of Guînes, to be taken from two measures of land lying next to the highway of la Leulene;
  • Three polkyns of wheat and 16d. given to the nuns by Jacques de Nielles, knight, from certain lands which are held from him by the son of Simon de la Haure Maison;
  • All tenants in the park hay which are between the abbey church and the castle, with a moiety of the ditch stream of les Tournepique;
  • Six measures of woodland lying southwest of Hottinghem or Hantyngham (lost, Pas-de-Calais), abutting onto the wood of the lord of Fiennes and the wood of the comte de Guînes called 'Bertyn' and the wood of the hospital of Guînes;
  • About 22 measures of land lying at Hottinghem or Hantyngham between the manor of the abbey and the wood of the comte de Guînes;
  • About sixteen measures of land lying on the edge of the wood of la Dune, as appears by their old rentals;
  • About seven and a half measures of land lying in the valley of la Dune (unidentified) abutting against the wood of la Dune and the drove of Guînes;
  • Four and a half measures of land lying at Wauterssart abutting against the wood of la Palme and the wood of the hospital of Guînes;
  • Fifteen measures of land lying at 'Gawdingale' (unidentified) and fourteen measures of land lying at 'Lyfvesfeld' (unidentified);
  • Part of a measure of land lying in the valley of 'Goldyndale' (unidentified) and another which Chrestian de Moiekes ought to hold from the comte and the abbey;
  • About five measures of land lying in 'le Boulkesdale' (unidentified);
  • About four and a half measures of land at 'Marottisdale' (unidentified);
  • About five measures of land lying between the mill of Dourebrook (Pas-de-Calais) and the path 'de le Wlynne';
  • About four and a half measures of land lying beside the five measures mentioned in the last entry;
  • Seven and a half measures lying south of the Maison Dieu of Guînes abutting the curtilage 'Clay Baltoy' (par. Beussnet, Pas-de-Calais);
  • Five and a half measures and eleven viroundeux that were bought from Jean Wytyng and are called the land of 'Brule' (unidentified);
  • Ten measures of land lying within the close of the abbey in two parcels.
  • Appeal that since there are many others lands which cannot at present be committed to memory, the king might not take them but allow them to be received to their right according to the laws and customs of the lands. There are also further other rents, revenues, lands, woodlands, meadows and other possessions under the custody of the captains of Sangatte and Hames-Boueres castles (Pas-de-Calais), which castles are held of the comtes of Guînes, as well as other lands etc. held from the king.
  • There are dead rents in the lordship of Guînes, in the parishes of St. Pierre, St. Bertin, St. Blaise, Espelleques, Wendyn', Bonningues-lez-Calais, Wadenthun, Saint-Inglevert, Bessyng, Pihen, Colewede, Elyngtun', Nielles, Markene, Hames, Campagne and Ardres, and rents of wheat in Ardres, Guînes, Hottinghem and St. Blaise.
  • The nuns also claim other rents, services and courts.
