Description

Articles against John [Melford], abbot of Bury St. Edmunds (Suffolk), by the inhabitants of the town.

  • That the abbot and his predecessors had always previously paid £8 19s. 6d. towards any fifteenth granted to the king for those lands and tenements they held within the town of Bury St. Edmunds, but now John refuses to pay and tries the lay the charge upon the inhabitants;
  • That the greater part of the town of Bury St. Edmunds is held of Katharine [of Aragon], queen of England, by suit of her honour court and a certain rent, and that previously the town had been a parcel of the earldom of March, but that the abbot, intending to disinherit the king and defraud the queen, claimed that the town was held of him and that he wanted to force the inhabitants to pay him 100 marks for their freehold;
  • Since the death of Richard, duke of York, father of king Edward IV, the abbot and his predecessors have had the town in farm and by sufferance but no abbot has kept court for the honour and has made leases to the disinheritance of the king.
