Description

Fragment of a cartulary of the priory of Brooke. (Rutland). Entries concern:

  • 1. Grant by William Freney (de Fraxneto), son of Ralph Freney, of a bovate of land in Belton (Keletona) in free alms to the priory church of St. Mary, Brooke;
  • 2. Grant by William Freney, son of Ralph Freney, in perpetual alms to the priory church of St. Mary, Brooke, of all lands which the prior and canons hold from him in fee quit from all service save foreign service: five bovates of land in Belton of the gift of his father, three of which Richard Alchesbron or Alkesbrunn held, two held by Turkill and a sixth which Richard son of Seward held; four bovates of the gift of his mother in 'Widme' (unidentified), two of which Nicholas held, a third held by William Miller or 'Molendarius' and a fourth held by Oger or Hodgerus or Horodgerus; six acres that accrued to his demesne by two bovates held by Nicholas;
  • 3. Grant by Ralph Freney in pure and perpetual alms, with his body, of six shillings in the vill of Belton to be taken from that bovate which William son of Richard Turkill held from him, in return for a pittance to the canons each year on Ralph's anniversary;
  • 4. Grant in free widowhood and in pure and perptual alms by Juliana Freney, daughter and heiress of Ralph Freney, to the church and canons of Brooke of a rent of six shillings which Ralph, her father, gave them in order that they celebrate his anniversary each year, to be taken from that bovate which William son of Richard Turkill held from him in the lands of Belton;
  • 5. Confirmation by William Freney of the grant made in perpetual alms to the priory church of St. Mary, Brooke, of the six bovates of land which he gave them in Belton, those three bovates which Richard Alchesbron held and those two held by Turkill;
  • 6. Confirmation by William Freney of the grant made in perpetual alms to the priory church of St. Mary, Brooke, of the land which he gave them in Belton, namely those three bovates which Richard Alchesbron held, together with his homage, and those two held by Turkill, and two virgates of land in Widme which William has granted to the church of Brooke by the grant of his parents, one of which was given to Walter son of Bonda, and six acres of his demesne which was added as an increment to that virgate, the bovate which William Miller held, the bovate which Oger held with the appurtenant toft; this grant was made in the presence of, and with the consent of, his heir, Robert;
  • 7. Grant by William Freney (Frethen', Frethn'), son of Ralph Freney, with the assent of Robert, his son and heir, in free alms to the church and canons of St. Mary, Brooke, of the homage of Reginald, William's son, and that virgate of land which he held from him in Belton, and that virgate formerly of William Druerie, for an annual rent of three shillings for all services save foreign service;
  • 8. Grant by Henry son of Alexander de Martinestrop to the church and canons of St. Mary, Brooke, of Wadeholme ('Wadeholmel') in the field of Martinsthorpe (Rutland) in pure and perpetual alms;
  • 9. Bond of Reginald son of Alexander de Martinestrop acknowledging the debt of 12d. he and his heirs owe to the church and canons of St. Mary, Brooke, for a bovate of land that he has of Alice, his sister, for all services owed to the canons save foreign service, with first refusal on that land in the event of a sale;
  • 10. Notification by Robert de Martinestrop', son of Alexander lord of the vill, that he has given himself to the abbey church of Kenilworth (Warwickshire) and has taken on the religious habit. He therefore grants to the canons of Brooke all of that tenement of one bovate with toft which he held of them in Martinsthorpe, formerly of Henry son of Edwin, and another toft formely of Ralph Clare with two selions of land that rise up to the field named 'Leoldebreche' between two paths towards Leigh (Leyam), for which grant the canons have given him five marks with which to enrobe himself;
  • 11. Grant by Henry de Martinestrop' to the church and canons of St. Mary, Brooke, in pure and perpetual alms of three acres of land and half an acre of meadow in the fields of Martinsthorpe with all appurtenances within and outside the vill, namely half an acre by Grenegate towards Gunthorpe (Rutland), a rod above the moor belonging to Alice, a rod of William Maycount or Maicount, two selions below that next to the land of Roger Bulin, half an acre beneath Calnhyll between the land of Robert Abbe or Abe and the land of William Maycount, and two rods which sit atop Milnegat', one next to the land of Robert Abbe and the other next to the land of Beatrice de Brimuncton, three rods beneath Langpole between the land of Henry de Boville and the land of William Maycount, and a rod at the bridge of Gunthorp (Rutland) next to the land of Alice, sister of the lord;
  • 12. Grant by Henry de Martinestrop' to the church of St. Mary and the sacristy of Brooke in pure and perpetual alms of three and a half acres of arable land and six selions in the fields of Martinsthorpe, namely an acre in Flaxencroft, one and a half acres opposite to Hernehull between the land of Beatrice and John de Manetona, and a half-acre beneath the highway that extends towards Ridlington (Rutland), and one and a half acres above Langepol, and six selions which sit atop the assart of William Levenod and four selions next to the toft of Osbert on the western side in the vill of Martinsthorpe;
  • 13. Sale by Henry de Martinistrop', son of Alexander, to Ralph, the prior, and the canons of St. Mary, Brooke, of his bondsman named Hugh son of Ingald de Martinestrop' in return for nine shillings;
  • 14. Quitclaim by William son of Alexander de Martinestrop' to the church of St. Mary, Brooke, of three acres of arable and one and a half acres of meadow in Martinsthorpe, which Alexander lord of Martinsthorpe gave to the house of Brooke in pure and perpetual alms, and half a toft to the north next to the highway formerly of Henry son of Edwin, a half beneath the vill next to the land of William Clerk for three selions beneath William's toft, and another half-acre opposing Herneshill between the land of Richard Yvo, and a third half-acre beneath Hangefurlong between the land of Robert son of the Priest and Yvo, and a fourth half-acre between Robert and Simon Peston, and a fifth half-acre in Flaxcroft between the land of the lady of Gunthorpe and Yvo, and a sixth and final half-acre towards the manor that crossed the road and descends towards the water on the left of Alexander's Holm.
