Description

Articles in favour of Richard Midlyngton or Midlington, former abbot of Beaulieu (Hampshire) deposed by the simoniacal intrusion of John Gloucetre, late abbot of Hailes (Gloucestershire), into the abbacy through the preferment of William, abbot of Waverley (Surrey). The articles confirm Midlyngton's canonical election and papal confirmation, and are promoted by Richard Tichefeld and John Petrusfeld, monks of Beaulieu. Further articles detail Gloucetre's dilapidation of the abbey's properties and unlicensed sale of wood and livestock, and spoliation of plate.

On the dorse are accounts of the churchwardens of Hanborough (Oxfordshire), from 1411 to 1418 (with an additional list of churchwardens from 1419-1423), which detail debts, payments made for ale, building materials and to workmen making repairs to parish buildings and property. In 1411, the accounts detail debts owed to Richard Snareston, various payments to Latham de Bekebrok, Salmon Carpenter and Richard atte Welle, all of whom are working in the parish on repairs, buildings, digging, etc., Master Robert Newby, moneys paid out for victuals bought in Oxford, to the executors of Master Hugh Hyll, the last rector, and in 1417 payments to the proxy of Robert Matoun, to William Sleyman and John Kambrey, glazier working on a window. In 1418 there is a payment to the proxy of John Thassher as well as to Robert Sprot.

The churchwardens of Hanborough are:

  • John Freman and Simon Joiner, 1411;
  • William Peck and Hugh Bere, 1413;
  • John atte Forde, Robert Wylkyns and Robert Sprot, 1414;
