Proceedings at the Augustinian general chapter at the abbey of St Mary de Pré, Leicester (Presidents: Richard Pescall, abbot of St Mary de Pré, and Henry Cocks, abbot of Northampton, in the absence of Richard Wilson, prior of Newburgh (Yorkshire, North Riding) through Ralph Maxfield, abbot of Kenilworth (Warwickshire), surrogate.)

Ordinances for visiting various houses of the Order:

  • priory of St Botulph, Colchester (Essex), to be visited within three months by the abbot of St Osyth (Essex) and the prior of Elsing Spital for its contumacy towards the priors of Barnwell and Elsing Spital, visitors at the last general chapter;
  • priory of Dunstable (Bedfordshire) to be visited by the abbot of Launde due to disputes between John Wastell, prior, and the convent, and on account of the expulsion by the prior of the abbots of Launde and St James, Northampton, visitors constituted at the last general chapter at Barnwell in 1506.

The prior of Launceston (Cornwall) was penalised 100s. for contravening a statute concerning giving money for food to canons; the subprior of Launceston to be removed to Ixworth priory and Dom Defort, canon of Launceston, to be removed to Leeds priory because they were found to be special rebels. The prior of St Botulph's, Colchester (Essex) appeared before the presidents and surrendered bulls obtained contrary to the liberties of the Austin Canons. Further decrees prohibited any member of the Order from paying 2d. to William Sayling, prior of Merton (Surrey), towards the building of St Mary's College, Oxford, until the prior makes full account, appointed Thomas Bole, canon of St Mary without Bishopgate, London, to be prior of St Mary's College for a year after the general chapter, and suspended the prior of Royston (Hertfordshire) from all divine offices, imposing a fine of 20s. upon him.

  • John Young, prior of Repton (Derbyshire) (1508-33), and the prior of St Thomas priory, Stafford, to visit the diocese of Coventry & Lichfield;
  • priors of Elsham and Nocton Park (Lincolnshire) to visit the diocese of Lincoln in the archdeaconries of Lincoln, Stow, Leicester and Northampton;
  • prior of Newnham (Bedfordshire) and John Lancaster, prior of Launde (Leicestershire), to visit the diocese of Lincoln in the archdeaconries of Oxford, Buckingham, Bedford, & Huntingdon;
  • Edmund Forrest, prior of Llanthony (1501-25), and the prior of Haverfordwest (Pembrokeshire) to visit the dioceses of Worcester, Hereford & St David's.

The abbots and Osney and Darley and the prior of Guisborough (Yorkshire, North Riding) were elected presidents of the 1518 general chapter. The abbot of Cirencester, Master Thomas Bole, canon of St Mary without Bishopgate, London, and Master Andrew Sayn, canon of Barnwell, were assigned to deliver an English sermon at that general chapter. Master Peter Hardy, canon of Bridlington, William Wale, canon of Kenilworth, and John Spylman, canon of West Acre (Norfolk), were assigned to deliver the first Latin sermon, and Thomas Egerton, canon of Leeds, Christopher Barmsam, canon of Walsingham (Norfolk), and Richard German, canon of Taunton, a second Latin sermon.

Robert Goodman, canon of Canons Ashby, drafted the proceedings of the general chapter.
