The British Council created regional departments in order to manage its networkof overseas offices. Initially there were three Overseas Divisions, ordepartments; the geographical boundaries of these changed frequently, and overtime have included the East Asia and Pacific division (EAP), the Americas,Pacific and Asia division (APA), and the Middle East department (MDE). Majorpolicy decisions were made at the country level, whilst the regional divisionsprovided support and administered the budgets. In 2005 the British Councilintroduced a more formal regional structure, in which the Regional Directorshad a key role in coordinating policy and activities across all countrieswithin their region.
