Administrative / biographical background

The first Advisory Committees were established in 1935, to represent theinterests of the various sectors with which the British Council worked. Theexact committees changed, according to the types of activity the BritishCouncil was engaged in. They included: Visual Arts, Literature, Film,Television and Video, Science and Technology, Law, Libraries and Information,English Teaching, and Universities Advisory Committees. Advisory Panels weresmaller subject specific groups, usually falling under an advisory committee. For example, the Literature Panel fell under the English Language AdvisoryCommittee. In c.2001, the Advisory Committee structure was reviewed, and thesubject specific committees were replaced by a smaller number of sectoradvisory groups. Advisory Panels have remained, albeit on a less formalfooting, to advise the British Council on specific legal or subject areas. Forexample, the Disability Advisory Panel and the Acquisitions Panel which supportthe Art Collection.
