BT 347
1940-1945
This series contains daily casualty registers from the Second World War, kept by the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen.
The registers record the daily ship casualties mainly due to enemy action but also including other routine causes of losses at sea which affected allied merchant fleets during the War of 1939 to 1945. Each incident is recorded naming the class of vessel, the ship's name, nationality of the ship, date and time, cause and approximate position, voyage details and cargo and latest information available. Additional information is occasionally given on attached forms.
Chronological. The sheet numbers covered in each binder are given on each front cover together with the dates covered by each binder. Each page within the binders is numbered and dated.
BT 347/8 is an alphabetical index to the ships named in pieces 1-7.

The date range of these records suggests that the practice of recording the casualties started when Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen was the responsibility of the Shipping Intelligence Branch of the Ministry of Shipping and ended when the Registrar was under the Ministry of War Transport. The only reference now to the Shipping Intelligence Branch in the records is that it is written on the covers of each of the binders. This Branch was probably created by the Ministry of Shipping in the early years of the conflict.
