The Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) was formed in July 1995, following the merger of the former Department for Education and the Employment Department. While the majority of functions carried out by the originating departments continued to be carried out by the new body, certain functions did pass to other government departments. These were as follows: responsibility for industrial relations matters, redundancy, work permits, ACAS and industrial tribunals passed to the Department of Trade and Industry; the Health and Safety Executive and related policy divisions passed to the Department for the Environment; the employment figure and statistics divisions moved to the Central Statistical Office.

In May 2001, the employment functions of the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) were transferred to a newly created Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), with the education functions becoming the responsibility of the new Department for Education and Skills (DfES).
